How to Stop Dog Jumping

One thing that i always appreciate as a dog owner is when someone makes an effort to stop dog jumping. It isn’t because I find it overly annoying, but I do find it to be a safety problem and often worry that the owner will feel overly embarrassed.

Feeling embarrassed over your dog is one of the worst feelings ever, and having a dog that instantly jumps all over your guest is not a pleasant experience. If the guest doesn’t mind dogs, it isn’t that big of a problem. For people that do mind though; it can have a horrible affect on both you, your dog and your visitors.

In addition, jumping up can hurt someone, especially young children or seniors, and it can lead to a number of vet or medical bills and possibly even a lawsuit.

However, even if your dog doesn’t hurt someone by jumping, it is a very rude habit that a dog can learn and is something that an owner should correct as soon as they possibly can. Thankfully, with consistency in training, it is very easy to stop dog jumping.

Like many other dog behaviors that we worry about, jumping is a natural behavior that all dogs do, although some more than others. In addition, jumping can be reinforced by owners who do not curb the habit at a young age, or they make the dog jump without even realizing it.

I once knew a Labrador Retriever who was the nicest dog when people came to his house. He would sit beside his owner and politely wait to be greeted by the visitors. Once he was greeted, he would wag his tail, sniff for a few minutes and then settle down with a toy or a treat.

However, when a specific guest came in the house, and bellowed out a loud, “Why HELLO puppy,” this well-mannered dog would become a nightmare and would jump up, lick and wiggle all over the room. It wasn’t that the dog wasn’t trained, or that he didn’t know what he was supposed to do, the problem was that this one person allowed him to do whatever he wanted at greeting. While this may not seem like a huge deal, without consistency, the dog will quickly decide that every guest can be greeted the way his favorite guest could be, and this quickly became a problem, until the owner had to grab his collar and hold him away from guests who came in the door.

The reason why I want to mention this is simply to illustrate how people, and not only the owner, can encourage jumping and the reason why it is important to be consistent in your efforts to stop dog jumping.

Now that you know some of the reasons as to why your dog might be jumping, its time to learn how to correct the problem, which you will find our next article: How to Stop Dog Jumping – Part Two
