If you have ever typed in the words, “effective dog training tips”, into a search engine, you are probably be inundated with thousands, and I mean thousands, of products that are touting themselves as the most effective, and easy, way to train your dog.

Now, I’m not saying this to discredit many of the products and training systems out there but it is important to stress a few things.

Training never sees next day results. No matter how much a product or training system says otherwise, training is never instantaneous, it takes time, it takes patience and it is usually only as good as the trainer who is utilizing it.

Training is rarely easy. Sure, it can be fun, you and your dog can enjoy and your dog can even learn very easy but with every exceptionally well-trained dog, there are always hours and hours of work that are involved in achieving that end result. It may not have been hard, but neither was it a breeze.

Training is individual. Okay, this last one may confuse you, we are, after all, a training site, but in every system, you need to make allowances for each individual dog. So, for instance, food based rewards may not work with some dogs and it may work with others, each dog is an individual so it is important for an owner to modify every training system slightly to create a desired effect.

It may seem strange that I am going on about this, since I want to talk about effective dog training tips, but I wanted to stress these so that dog owners can avoid the pitfall. Training is not a quick and easy jaunt down the street and for you to have the best results with your dog, you need to set those expectations aside.

As I have mentioned, there are countless ways to train a dog and it always seems to be changing. At one time, many owners believed that the best way to train a dog was through punishment. When the dog didn’t obey a command, he was corrected with either a switch or the boot heel. Over the years, we have come to realize that this form of training was not effective and actually did more harm than good and it has evolved into something much more positive for all involved.

In addition, we have also learned that there are three elements that are needed to have the most effective manner of training possible and these are:

Fun: Training should be fun for both you and your dog. It shouldn’t feel like work and when it does, it is an indicator that it is time to take a break.

Rewards: The best way to get a command across to a dog is by using positive reinforcement and rewards. Time and time again, trainers have shown owners that rewards for good behavior is the most effective way to train.

Patience: When you are training your dog, it is important to have ample patience. Most dogs don’t get something right off and it can take months before a dog has perfected a command so an owner needs to have a lot of patience and not expect results immediately.

Once you have all three of those elements, you can really put our effective dog training tips into use and in the next article we will look at some of the most effective ways of training your dog: Effective Dog Training Tips – Part Two
