Dog Obedience Training

Everyone, no matter how many dogs you have owned, is aware of the term dog obedience. We all know that it is important but many people are unsure what it means exactly. What is dog obedience training and why is it so important?

Thankfully, I am here to go over dog obedience training and give you a little insight into what it is. Before I do, however, I want to answer the simple question, why is it so important. I know that this may seem backwards but dog obedience training is one of the most important things that you can do for your dog and it is something that you should do for your dog so your dog lives a long and happy life with you.

The reasons why dog obedience training is so important is for the following reasons:

It creates a healthy relationship: When your dog has been properly trained, you end up having a healthier relationship with him. He knows his roles and you are not spending your days frustrated because he is behaving badly.

It establishes a bond: Although a bond is part of a healthy relationship, it is also an important thing to look at outside of the relationship. Even the most neglected dog can create a bond with someone who properly trains and cares for him.

It lays out rules: When people think about obedience training, they often think it’s only about teaching a dog commands like “sit,” “stay,” or “come”. They don’t realize that dog obedience training also teaches a dog what the rules are in a home and the proper manners that are expected of him.

It provides communication: While you won’t be having a give and take verbal conversation with your dog, obedience dog training will show you and your dog how to communicate with each other. This enables you to know what he needs and wants and also enables him to do what you want.

It curbs negative behaviors: All dogs will have the occasional negative behavior that you just don’t want to see and dog obedience training is the best and most effective way to curb those behaviors.

On the negative side, if a dog does not receive proper dog obedience training, the following things can occur, which further illustrates the importance of dog obedience training.

Aggression problems: Although this is linked to socialization, proper training can play a factor in dog aggression. Dog obedience training can curb many forms of aggression and it is often used to modify aggressive behavior.

Bad Behaviors: One of the most common problems that arise from a dog not being properly trained is bad behaviors such as jumping, nipping and excessive barking. It is from these unchecked behaviors that hundreds of thousands of dogs are surrendered to a shelter each year.

Family Stresses: You may not realize it but when a dog is not properly trained, it can cause a lot of stress in the family and it ends up becoming a choice between harmony at home or the dog.

Injury: If a dog is not properly trained, there is a greater risk that he could be injured or he could injure someone else. This could result in thousands of dollars in vet or legal bills and it could result in the dog having to be euthanized.
