How to Stop a Dog from Biting

When you combat the biting problem there are a number of different ways to do this and it will differ depending on the age of your dog. If you are dealing with puppy biting, I would recommend that you read our article titled, “How to Stop a Puppy from Biting”.

If the dog is a young adult, then you will be doing a combination of new training and old training starting with bite inhibition. Since you dog may not understand why he shouldn’t be biting, begin with teaching him that it is not appropriate.

To do bite inhibition simply follow these steps.

1. Place your thumb into your dog’s mouth and wait until he bites down on it.

2. As soon as there is any pressure, make a loud yelp of pain. This should cause him to release your thumb immediately and you should pull it away quickly.

3. Wait until he gives you an apology, either by sitting down or doing another command and then forgive him for the bite.

If he becomes more excited and bites harder, remove your hand and your body from the play. Ignore him until he apologizes and don’t give in for any reason. This will teach him that what he did was wrong and he won’t get your attention when he bites you.

As you are teaching him bite inhibition, it is also important to teach obedience training. Part of this will involve teaching him “off” and teaching him how to take a treat without biting. Remember that the best way to do this is to cup the treat with your hand and give him the back of your hand. If he nips, remove your hand, and the treat, quickly and correct him with a firm, “off”. When he doesn’t nip, you can release the treat to him.

With older dogs, it is very important to seek the advice of a trainer, especially if he has just started biting. There may be a number of reasons for the biting and an experienced trainer will not only help you in solving the problem but will also help you in correcting the problem.

Remember that when you are trying to stop a dog from biting, the best things that you can do is make sure his needs are being met and that he is receiving enough exercise and attention. In addition, be consistent and have firm rules in place so your dog knows exactly what his place in the pack is.
