How to Stop a Dog from Whining

When you are correcting the problem of whining, it is very important to make it appropriate to the type of whining that is occurring. Obviously, if it is pain related, a trip to the vets is the best way to solve the problem and should be done.

With all types of whining, it is very important that your dog’s needs are being met. Every day make sure that he has the proper food and water and make sure that you are interacting with him. In addition, make sure that his exercise needs are being met. A dog that is tired is less likely to whine.

A Cry of Loneliness

One of the most common times that a dog will whine is when he is lonely and this is usually when you have crated him or have left the house for an extended period of time.

To stop a dog from whining when he’s lonely, start by making sure all of his needs are met. Give him a good workout before you leave and then make sure that you are leaving him with plenty of things to do. A nice chew toy such as a Kong and a few other activities will help pass the time that you are gone and by the time he notices that you aren’t there, you will be walking through the door.

Before you leave, turn on a radio so he has some noise to keep him company and make leaving very simple. Don’t gush about how much you will miss him but simply put him in his crate, say goodbye, and then head out the door. If you exercised him before you put him in his crate, then he will probably sleep for a few hours before he begins to worry about you not being there.

When you come home, don’t go immediately to his crate but wait a few minutes. This will teach him that you will come when you are ready and not before. It will also teach him to be quiet and patient because you will come eventually.

Attention and Learned Whining

To stop a dog from whining for attention, it is very important that you don’t give in and give your dog the attention he wants. Instead, ignore him by either leaving the room or turning your back to him. Don’t give him any positive reinforcement or negative, since yelling at him to be quiet is a form of attention, and then wait until he has stopped. Once he has, you can give him praise for being a good dog or if you have crated him, you can remove him from the crate as soon as he stops whining.

Begging for a Meal

Lastly, when you are trying to stop a dog from whining, it’s important that you never give in to your dog when he is begging. Ignore the behavior and never allow him to have food. If you drop food on the floor, pick it up and place it into his dog bowl when he has stopped whining.

If he continues to whine, remove him from the room while you prepare his food and then bring him back into the room and have him sit in front of the food bowl. If he whines to get it, remove the food from the floor and only place it back once he has stopped. Never allow him to eat until you say that he can.

The key to training your dog not to whine is to be consistent. Never give him attention, either good or bad, if he is whining and simply ignore him. Make sure his needs are being met and that he has plenty of items to occupy him when you are away and you should be able to curb most of his whining behaviors.
