In addition to socialization, dog-to-dog aggression can be narrowed down to breeds. Some breeds are more likely to be aggressive than other breeds and it is important for an owner to be aware of this. However, it is not okay to accept it simply because it is a breed trait since no form of aggression should be tolerated. Instead, it should be used as a guide in properly training and socializing your dog.
Other reasons why a dog can suffer from dog to dog aggression are:
Improper Training:
Although socialization plays a big part on whether your dog will suffer from dog to dog aggression, training does as well. If a dog is not properly trained, including bite inhibition training, then he may become aggressive later in life.

Leash manners:
I once had the privilege of meeting a wonderful Border Collie who was a joy to be around about 99% of the time. The only time that it became a negative experience was when the Border Collie was out on a walk and met another dog. At that point, she would start jumping up, barking and growling in an effort to protect her owner from the other dog.
While she did not suffer from dog to dog aggression off leash, she did on leash and it confused many trainers until they realized that she didn’t have proper leash manners and ultimately felt a loss of control by not being able to greet a new dog on her own terms.
Although this is a minor problem to fix, and they were successful at fixing it in this Border Collie, it is important to note that not properly training your dog on greeting other dogs on the lead can result in a varied version of dog on dog aggression.
Medical Problems:
Many times, when you see a sudden shift in the aggression levels of your dog, it can be attributed to a medical condition. Before you begin training your dog, it is important to visit your veterinarian and determine if there is any underlying medical problem that has caused the aggression to occur.
Mistreatment:
Lastly, many dogs can suffer from aggression because of how they were raised. Usually when you see aggression due to neglect or mistreatment, you will witness more than one form of aggression. In addition, most dogs that have been abused or neglected are also not properly trained or socialized.
It is important that regardless of how the dog to dog aggression has manifested itself, that you do not ignore it and allow it to continue. Remember that when you are trying to stop dog to dog aggression it is important to find out why the aggression is there and begin training to solve it.
