How to stop puppy biting

Now that you have reduced the pressure of his biting, it is time to start decreasing the frequency of his biting. Usually by this stage, it has become more of a mouthing than anything but you should still control when your puppy places his mouth on you.

The best time to demonstrate to your puppy that mouthing is only acceptable when you say is when you are training with a treat. The smell of the food will often excite the puppy enough to get him to mouth your hand for the food and this is not acceptable.

Step One:
Take the treat, also known as the bait, and place it in front of your puppy’s nose.

Step Two:
When he goes to take it, usually nipping when he does, say firmly, “Off!” and remove your hand and the treat immediately. This will teach your puppy that you are not pleased with his action and that this negative behavior results in his treat being removed.

Step Three:
Bring the treat back down to his level and repeat. If he mouths your hand again before you let him take it, say “Off” again and then try a third time. If he doesn’t take it, praise him and then give him the treat. Each time you do this; extend the time between holding the treat in front of him and finally treating him. Make sure you praise him for each second that passes where he hasn’t mouthed your hand for a treat.

If you follow this technique, you should have no problem trying to stop puppy biting but as I have mentioned this doesn’t always work with all dogs.

When you are training your puppy not to bite, you should be consistent with him. Biting is not appropriate and it will always result in something happening, such as a yelp or a time out.

In addition, you should never hit your puppy for biting or even bite him yourself. This teaches your puppy nothing and can affect the bond that you are trying to establish with him. In addition, it can make him timid or aggressive.

If the methods above dosen’t completely stop puppy biting, you can try a number of different things.

Redirection: When your puppy is biting, move your hand away and give him something else to bite instead.

Loud Noise: If your puppy doesn’t react to a yelp, you can shake a can of coins to startle him and break the action.

Make biting uncomfortable: In extreme cases, you can make the bite very uncomfortable for the puppy by placing your finger under his tongue for 10 seconds. Say “No!” and your puppy will begin to realize that biting just isn’t worth it.

Bitter Apple: Finally, you can make your hand taste awful with a spray called bitter apple or you can use rubber gloves. Be careful if you use the bitter apple since you could accidentally rub it into your eyes and no one wants to get it into their own mouth. The gloves work well too. The main thing is something that tastes awful so your puppy starts to equate nipping with a bad taste.
