Tips for Potty Training Your Dog

When you are potty training your dog, make sure that you are consistent. Let him know that having an accident in the house is not okay and that you are not happy with him. Never hit him for having an accident, and never rub his nose in the urine since he will learn nothing from it and this will only hurt the bond you are trying to build with him.

The best thing to do when you are potty training your older dog is to designate a certain part of your yard for your dog. This way, he will begin to associate a certain area as a potty area.

In addition, if your dog has an accident outside, don’t take him for a walk so he can finish relieving himself. A walk is a lot of fun for a dog so if you take him for a walk after he has done something bad, he will begin to associate urinating inside with something good and the problem will be very difficult to solve.

Now to the training.

Restrict his movements:
When I say this, I am not actually telling you to tie him up completely but you should restrict his movement throughout the house. He should remain with you when you are at home and when you aren’t, he should be kept in his crate.

The leash will come into play here since you will keep him leashed and you should attach it to your belt so he can’t wander off. Chances are that he will have a lot of problems with this but if you are patient and firm about this, he will soon learn that he has no choice on the matter and will begin to accept it.

Break the action:
I am always stressing this to dog owners, it is very important to break the action, not the dog. When you see your dog having an accident inside, you need to say firmly and loudly, “NO,” and clap your hands. Don’t yell but let him know that you are very unhappy with what he did and you also want to startle him to break the action of urinating.

Take him outside:
Once you break the action, you will want to run him right outside to the designated spot so he can relieve his bladder. Remember that you aren’t going for a walk and simply wait until he goes to the bathroom. When he does, praise and treat him for being such a wonderful dog.

Treat the area:
After you are done outside with your dog, go into the house and clean up the spot. Separate him while you are doing this so he does not become interested in the spot again. Make sure that if someone can’t keep an eye on him at this time that he is crated because many dogs will have another accident shortly after coming in.

Create a schedule:
The last thing you should do when you are potty training your dog is to create a schedule for your dog. Take him out for a walk in the morning and in the evening and then set up specific times during the day when you will take him out. The more frequent you are with a schedule, the less likely it will be for your dog to have an accident.

Once your dog realizes that going inside gets him a negative response, while going outside gets him a good one, potty training your dog will become very easy and before you know it, he will be completely potty trained.
